Rose MacFarlane trained as a nurse at the prestigious Royal Hospital, Sheffield in the North of England between 1963 and 1966. She gained experience nursing in NHS and private Care and Rest Homes until a workplace accident in 1985 forced early retirement.
She spent a year as a UNA volunteer in a Jordan hospital in 1967 just after the Six-Day War. She was made matron at the age of twenty-two and addressed as "Sitt Malaki", Miss Queen by the staff, beating the record of her aunt Agnes who was Britain's youngest matron before WWII at the age of twenty-nine.
This is a thoughtful, heartfelt book charting the author's journey from childhood in Derbyshire and Cornwall in a big boisterous Catholic family, through her nurse training in Sheffield and midwifery training in London. It was a bumpy ride through the Swinging 'Sixties. She writes of her two marriages and two children. She suffered family tragedy and battled Catholicism all her life saying it was an unwelcome imposition by her Irish GP father. She has plenty to say about how nursing was - the good, the bad, the ugly - and how it could be improved further today.
You will laugh throughout the book. Occasionally you will also want to weep.
