Bryn Glover joins this long tradition by turning his attention to his own small world of the scientific Health Service in general, and to Nuclear Medicine in particular.
Nuclear Medicine is the use of radioactive isotopes in diagnosis and treatment, and in the early 1960s most of the techniques in common use were rudimentary and crude, to put it in the kindest possible way. But the 1960s were also times in which great leaps were being made in those techniques, and as well as running a series of routine patient investigations on the people of Leeds and West Yorkshire, the author and his colleagues spent much of their time in devising and constructing numerous innovations and developments.
The unit at Leeds Infirmary was only the third such unit in the UK, the first outside London and the first in the world to headed by a consultant general physician. It was into this environment that the 22-year-old author found himself unceremoniously plunged a few years after its establishment.
Dr. Clive Hayter is the brilliant, if rather irascible consultant, and Glover records his early involvement in the developmental work that was undertaken by the colourfully cursing, pipe-smoking Hayter in the detailed measurement of blood pressure.
Various odd and eccentric characters on both the medical and technical staffs come and go, on one occasion pursued by Interpol, and the author and his much respected 'boss' provide a continuous, linking thread through the nineteen sixties and seventies. These characters range from Mrs Featherstone, the disastrous 'orderly' who probably broke more glassware than she managed to clean, to the impressive Bill Sutton who, working with hundreds of tiny goldfish, contributed much to our modern understanding of how our endocrine glands work together.
The stories began life as a form of simple laboratory record to ensure that old techniques were not forgotten for ever, but soon accrued personal details and anecdotes to the point where the original laboratory details became swamped. For any reader with the inclination, these long abandoned methods have been included as a set of notes at the end of the stories.
