Before the NHS was formed in 1948 medical care was provided largely by private institutions, such as Quarriers Orphan Homes at Bridge of Weir in Scotland. Quarriers was better known for its work with children, but little information is known about those dedicated people who lived and worked in the Sanatorium, which was part of Quarriers. They toiled under difficult conditions, risking infection, striving to treat hopeless cases of tuberculosis.
Two Good Men and True is intended to be much more than a dry medical history. As in any community there were characters such as young doctors from wealthy families who landed in all kinds of scrapes; and patients with special skills like Willie the rat charmer, a patient from the Epileptic Colony, who helped out in the medical laboratory - a situation that Health and Safety would not allow nowadays. This book explores the unknown and forgotten lives and social backgrounds of medical staff who lived and worked in the Sanatorium in the 1930s and 1940s; how they spent their leisure time and how they coped during the difficult war years.
In the past, thousands of patients were looked after without much hope in the Sanatorium. Bed rest, good feeding and fresh air were the norm. Painful, useless treatments for tuberculosis such as gold therapy, oleothorax and thoracoplasty were practised until one young man came along with fresh ideas.
Would anyone amongst the thousands of patients or their families and visitors who passed through the Sanatorium over many years have been able to guess that behind the tall wrought iron gates of the Consumption Sanatoria for Scotland, as it was originally called, that there was a seething hotbed of jealousy and struggles as to who should have the credit for promising research into tuberculosis and pulmonary cancer, before the advent of antibiotics? Despite criticisms and any shortcomings, Quarriers as a whole was a great institution of its time.
As drug-resistant tuberculosis is now touching millions of people’s lives around the world and cancer continues to do the same, it seemed timeous to tell the story behind the work carried out at the Sanatorium, especially when the research papers are now being sold on the Internet by American companies some seventy to eighty years after they were first published.
