It’s called “Karigiri”. Translated from the local language, Tamil, it means “Elephant Hill”. Essentially, it’s a rock, shaped like an Elephant. A giant once walked on that hill: not a giant towering inches above all other people. This was a giant in intellect, faith, character, compassion, vision, determination with an insatiable quest for knowledge. That giant was called Paul Brand.

Paul, together with his wife, Margaret, an equally extraordinary human being, motivated by their Christian faith, have given selflessly and powerfully to change, forever, the quality of life of people affected by leprosy, in both this world and the next.

In the mid 20th century, there were millions of leprosy patients but only one surgeon to serve them. Conventional wisdom said that leprosy could not be treated. Paul proved that wrong. His ingenious mind has restored the hands and protected the feet of countless thousands of men, women and children affected by the world’s oldest known communicable disease.

Paul was a man of faith. Everything he did was offered in service to God. Everywhere he looked, he saw God’s fingerprints. In his study of human anatomy he saw the purposes of God for the church. He willingly shared those insights.

When Paul and his colleagues first saw it, the land at Karigiri was parched and desert-like. There was nothing good there. But when the land was watered and fed, beautiful gardens, trees and grasses thrived. Karigiri is a wonderful, symbolic, image of how our relationship with God’s Spirit ought to be.
